Who Was Frank Tenney Johnson?
Frank Tenney Johnson was an American painter closely associated with Western art.
Born in 1874, Johnson developed a reputation for depicting the landscapes and people of the American West. Cowboys, horses, trails, desert landscapes and nighttime scenes became recurring subjects throughout his career.
Johnson became particularly well known for his nocturnes. These paintings often depict Western subjects illuminated by moonlight, campfires or other limited sources of light.
His distinctive approach to nighttime scenes helped establish an identifiable style that remains associated with his work today.
Johnson died in 1939, and his paintings continue to be collected and traded on the secondary art market.
How Much Is a Frank Tenney Johnson Painting Worth?
The value of a Frank Tenney Johnson painting can vary considerably.
Several factors may influence the value of an individual work, including:
- Subject matter
- Size
- Medium
- Date of execution
- Composition
- Condition
- Provenance
- Exhibition history
- Previous auction history
- Overall quality and desirability
Subject matter can be particularly important.
Johnson’s recognizable Western imagery, including cowboys, horses and nocturnal scenes, can attract strong collector interest. However, two paintings of similar size can still have substantially different values.
For this reason, an evaluation should consider the individual painting rather than relying on a general price range for the artist.
Frank Tenney Johnson Nocturne Paintings
Frank Tenney Johnson’s nighttime paintings are among the works most closely associated with the artist.
These nocturnes frequently depict riders, horses, camps or Western landscapes under moonlight.
The combination of Western subject matter and dramatic nighttime lighting helped distinguish Johnson from many of his contemporaries.
If you own a nighttime scene by Frank Tenney Johnson, we would be particularly interested in seeing photographs of the painting.
How to Sell a Frank Tenney Johnson Painting
Owners of important Western paintings have several potential ways to sell their artwork.
One option is consigning the painting to an auction house. Depending on the auction schedule and consignment terms, this process can require waiting for an appropriate sale and does not guarantee a particular result.
American Estate Buyers offers another option: selling the painting directly.
If we are interested in your Frank Tenney Johnson artwork, we can make a direct purchase offer. There is no obligation to accept our offer.
This can be particularly useful for collectors, heirs and estates that prefer a private transaction without waiting for an auction.
Inherited a Frank Tenney Johnson Painting?
Western paintings are frequently passed from one generation to another.
You may have inherited a Frank Tenney Johnson painting without knowing when it was purchased, what your family paid for it or what it may be worth today.
You do not need to research all of this before contacting us.
Photographs of the front and back of the painting can provide a useful starting point. Images of the signature, labels, inscriptions, gallery stickers and other markings can also help with an initial evaluation.
If you have old invoices, exhibition labels, letters or other documentation associated with the painting, keep those materials with the artwork.
Frank Tenney Johnson Signatures and Authentication
A signature alone does not establish that a painting is an authentic work by Frank Tenney Johnson.
When evaluating a potentially important painting, factors such as the painting itself, materials, provenance, labels, inscriptions and previous documentation may all be relevant.
Do not remove labels or markings from the back of a painting or discard an old frame before having the work evaluated.
If you believe you own a Frank Tenney Johnson painting, send us clear photographs of the entire artwork, signature, back of the painting and any labels or documentation.
